World War II- The Impact On People

How Rationing changed Civilian Life

Picture
Rationing was another major change to British people's lives in World War II. For food it was introduced on 8th January 1940, this meant it was fair for everyone because, whatever class you were you got the same allowance of food. The reason the goverment brought in rationing was because most of Britain's ships bringing food to the UK were sunk by German U-Boats while crossing the Atlantic. An extra allowance was given for luxury items such as rice, tinned fruit and cereals.
You were given 16 points every four weeks to survive on, however, you could spend them in any way you liked. Rationing for clothes followed shortly being introduced in May 1941. Everyone was told to grow as much food of their own as possible. A famous poster promoting this was 'Dig for Victory'.
