How Civilian Life was affected by the changing role of Women

From 1939, most men aged between 18 and 40 were recruited for military service. Consequently, work that had prevensly been done by men had to be completed by women, such as Civil Defence work, work in factories and on farms.
If you were a single women aged between 19 and 30 you had to registar for war work. They worked in the Auxiliary services, the Land Army or in industry. Only single women were made to work because the government was worried about the effect on families if married women were called up; however, many married women volunteered for war work anyway.
